It is in regards to the International Fiber Collaborative. They have been working on an "interdependence" tree project. Participants have been using traditional methods as well as recycled materials such as potato chip bags, old shoes, wire, grocery bags, etc. There is a $500 Fiber Grant toward any artist/individual who uses textile in a traditional or non-traditional way to further their artwork. Sculptors, Photographers, Fiber, Ceramics and Mixed Media artists are welcome. The deadline for submissions is March 15th. To see other leaves, go to their website. The address for them is here.

I really enjoyed double knitting at the February meeting! It reminded me that I bought yarn years ago to try making a double knitted cardigan. N. wanted to make sure that everyone knew about this enough in advance, so that the members could make something to show. J. Wagner will judge again. Items will be on display during the month of April. A reception will be on April 25th and there will be comments by the judges. J. We had a lovely party at the January meeting and Judy showed us how to avoid that annoying little "jog" when knitting stripes or patterns in the round.

Unfortunately, one of the coldest days occurred on the 15th when Sit 'n Knit was scheduled. At least it was a good day to stay home and keep warm with a knitting project. I have started on a new little sweater and hope to have 2 of them done by March.

Ann Marie sent me the information for the Alice Starmore book and the Portuguese Knitting book. The Alice Starmore book (click words for link).

Also: Portuguese Knitting by Andrea Wong, and for a free pattern, go to here.

If there is any interest, she has volunteered to share the DVD at a meeting or do a demonstration.

I apologize for the trouble some people had finding the current issue of Piecework magazine. Apparently subscribers actually get it before it hits the stands. It should be available now. It is the January/February 2009 - 3rd Annual Historical Knitting Issue.

C. For those who may be new, members promote knitting and the Guild by bringing lawn chairs and knitting at the Heritage House located on the north side of the Starlight Ballroom at the fair. We usually go on the Friday and Saturday, but are welcome to come any day we want. For those interested in tickets to participate in the demonstration, they'll be available at the July meeting or you can send us an email at qcknit AT gmail DOT com

I also have news about the upcoming Fiber Arts Festival. We have been asked to provide items for one or more showcases at the Children's Museum. If you have anything that you can loan that you don't want to put in the show, please bring it to the July meeting. It can be Afghans, sweaters, hats, purses, socks, samplers, etc. We will be arranging them sometime in August. We have also been asked to participate in a promotion for the show on September 15th. We will be demonstrating knitting at the Children's Museum on that day from 1 to 3 pm. Check you calendars to see if you can help.

I can't believe it, but Kim has already sent out letters to remind us that the Festival of Trees would appreciate donations of Christmas Stockings again this year. I guess that means that I have to decide on a design and get started. Although Kim told us last year that she wouldn't be doing it this year, she is. She told them that if they gave the ornaments to someone else, she would continue doing the stockings.

Cindy Weinberger
President

*Again, - please contact us at qcknit AT gmail DOT com if you have any questions or would like to participate in the above guild events.

July Program:
Since we will have many things to discuss and some may be gone on vacation, this month just bring something to work on. You will want to knit up a couple of inches in the yarn of your choice with the size needles you like before the meeting. The grass is greening up and I have a hyacinth in bloom. I want to thank Judy Wagner for her program on two socks at once and sock heels. I was quite pleased with how they came together.

This month’s program will be knitting socks from the toe up. The cast-on Judy Masat will show us looked very smooth and comfortable. You should bring two circular needles (in different colors, if possible) and yarn to match.

The Sit “n Knit will be at my house on April 19 – drop us an email if you need further details.

I look forward to seeing you all!

Cindy Weinberger
President

April Program: Judy Masat will teach the Turkish cast on, which she used in making a pair of socks from the toe up. The cast on makes a very nice toe. She used the Vogue Knitting magazine from the Fall of 2005 to learn this technique.

For the program, members are to bring two circular needles of approximately the same size and worsted weight yarn.

On-going Guild Projects
-Caps for Kids
-Afghan squares for community blankets.

Events In The Area
Guild members - Sit and Knit on March 15. There are only so many things that you can knit in the dark. However, big projects like afghans can keep you warm while you wait for heat.

Our March program will be a continuation of Judy's presentation on knitting two socks at once on two circular needles. I look forward to learning if I put my two beginnings on the needles properly.

Several of us were able to meet at Marge's for the February Sit 'Knit. We all had a good time! Lots of good conversation, knitting and cookies as a bonus.

Until our next meeting, stay warm and happy knitting.

Next Program Featured
Judy Wagner is teaching new techniques for knitting socks on 2 circular needles instead double pointed needles.
